One of the best German beer selections I have ever seen. And the food mostly your typical German grub is good as well. Staff rules and they have an amazing KAROKE live band on some Sunday nights. The only real issue is, it gets way crowded on a weekend night. But its a good spot if your downtown and looking to try a huge beer you have never had before

Such a fantastic, quintessential German Beer Hall. You'll get anything that you could think of being German here: good beer, good food, fun people, and...Das Boot! The brat basket is $4 and includes the best brat (both flash-fried and then grilled) and fries you'll ever have. $4? What a steal! However, my personal favorite is the Deluxe Grilled Cheese. This sandwich needs to be on the list of best grilled cheeses in the country. Boursin, meunster, and american on pressed sourdough is a cheese-lover's heaven. And keeps me coming back!

My husband and I visited Hessen Haus for the first time last week. The bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and friendly - they listened to what we wanted and directed us to the perfect beverage. My husband needed a gluten free beer so the bartender directed him to Strongbow (which they keep on tap). I had the Stiegl Radler Grapefruit (I prefer light and fruity). Both of us were more than satisfied. The culture is wonderful and there is ample seating both at the bar and away without everything feeling cramped. Would definitely recommend.

Hessen Haus is a spot I'll bring company for something different and just to show what Des Moines has going on downtown. It is not a fancy restaurant, but the best thing about it is you can either start or end your evening here. The food is really good, one of my favorite entrees to get is the Black Forest Schnitzel, the creamy sauce with spinach, ham and mushrooms is just delish! Very filling. For an appetizer I recommend the armadillo eggs, (yeah, I know, sounds really German), but hey. They're good. So if you want to start with dinner great, OR if you came with 4 or more people and want to celebrate like it's Oktoberfest, they have Das Boot to take care of that, and plenty of German beer a flowin'. Service can be spotty. We've had slow service and we've had decent service on different occasions. They don't sit you down when you walk in, you walk in and find a spot.

Authentic atmosphere with a great bier selection, great German food, and great service. I went to this old favorite on a business trip where I sat alone at the bar. From the time I walked in to the time I left, I felt right at home! The bartender taking care of me asked me my name and remembered it, and I noticed he greeted many regulars by name as they walked in. To eat I had the traditional wienerschnitzel and German potato salad, which was awesome. After my order was taken, it was less tban 15 minutes until I had my food. The restaurant was getting busy when I arrived, but the friendly bar staff still did a great job to keep engaging me in conversation. If I was with others I most certainly would have done a Das Boot, but I settled for a Jagger Train instead ($3 Jaggerbombs when trains pass by).

Pizza, not so great, but 4 stars for sure for the Schweinshaxe! Would definitely go back again just for that!

Went in after the Des Moines farmer's market and the place was fairly empty. Sat ourselves as the sign said and waited 15 minutes before a member of our party retrieved our own menus. After another 10 minutes we flagged down a waitstaff and asked for a server - with no apology they said since we had out menus they thought we had been helped. A server came by and took our order and apologized for the confusion. During this time the restaurant crowded up and ppl who were sat after us were already being brought their food. One of our party members ordered their food in a to-go box and was clearly in a slight rush. After waiting an HOUR total between getting a water and ultimately decided to walk out, we were spoken to once. Poor service, an apology and explanation go a long way.

I came here starving and excited for German food. i have been to Germany multiple times so I know what great German food tastes like. Turns out I was not overly wowed by the food. It was good, but not great. Just average. I had the wild boar and duck quesadilla as well as bier cheese soup. My friend had goulash. I had a bite of his and was under pressed. I'm glad I did not get it because one bite was plenty. The best part was listening to the live polka band and watching drunk people dance. Hessen Haus is also a bar. I would say maybe just go for the drinks and go somewhere else for the food.

Authentic feel, been to Berlin and Munich, this place resembles a beer hall you might find there. the beers are wide ranging and varied, the boot game is so much fun, try the snuff if your looking for a wild night. Always come back when I'm in Des Moines

One of the Full Court Press staples - it's been around a good while. It's busy on the weekends and during Oktoberfest. It's a solid bet for German beer and food. They do that quite well. I'm just not a huge German good and beer person but I know a lot of Iowans are.

Super fun! Came in with a large group on a Saturday and got great service. Das boot is a must! Great German beers on tap I couldn't decide which one I wanted to drink first. Wish we would have had time to try the food. They had my all time favorite lambics on tap!

This is one of those places you come and never want to leave. Beer after beer, plate after plate.... My experience here was much more enjoyable on a Wednesday afternoon than a Saturday night simply because of the weekend crowds, but the service is always knowledgeable, prompt and friendly and the beer selection and menu are extensive. The food is amazing; there's not a bad choice on the menu but the BBQ chicken is tender, juicy, excellently seasoned and highly recommended. The staff is super nice and genuinely cares about your experience, not just their tips. Long story short? Just go. Often.

We stopped in for dinner last night and sat outside in the outdoor seating area. Our waitress was friendly however we saw her infrequently at best. We had friends join us and we moved to a larger table about the same time our dinner came out. We had finished our food by the time she came back around to take our newcomers orders. We didn't see her again until our checks came out, someone else delivered our food. We were all dry on drinks and after waiting as long as we did, we just wanted our checks to leave when she came back. The food and drinks were good but without service, the experience fell flat.

Incredible place! Tried the beef stroganoff and Hacker Pschorr Munich Dark. The food was excellent! There is a very good selection of German drafts. The menu is extensive and has many German traditional dishes. I hope to come back and try some more items on the menu. I highly recommend the beef stroganoff. The bartender was friendly and we had promo service. Would recommend!

Delicious Bavarian nachos. Try them with the quesadilla meat for a nifty alternative flavor. Pretty much all the other food is rather fantastic as well! Grab two friends and come by on a day off work for $10 boots of all sorts of delicious beers (no, they will not fill it with Framboise or the high-proof beers). Stick around for Happy Hour from 3-6 for half price appetizers (hint: the amazing nachos are an appetizer) and $15 boots. It's pretty noisy and crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but pleasantly laid-back most other times. I wasn't on Yelp when I used to live close enough to go regularly, but I just visited the Hofbrauhaus in Chicago and the fact that the Hessen Haus out-shined it in every way imaginable made me feel obligated to post a review - especially given that the Hessen Haus remains one of only two establishments that I still make it a point to stop at nearly every time I'm back in town.

This bar is all German! Amazing German beer selection, comes in half pints or full pints! They've got a really great food menu, but maybe not the most friendly to vegetarians...however the hunter pizza may be worth a brief respite into carnivore kingdom. Boar, duck and more, baby. German music from time to time, too. We're talking accordions, people!

Awesome schnitzel and amazing service mixed with some great gravies. Need a say more. If you like gravies you really need to come here. Man I want some right now and remember Schnitzel happens!

Get here early on a weekend night if you have a big group. Hessen Haus is always a fun place to take a group of out-of-towners. Decent German beer selection and you must share a boot. Das Boot! I've never tried the food here.

After perusing some bars after dinner I happen to read about Hessen Haus on Yelp, I was pretty impressed they would have such a large beer list of tap and be in Des Moines. After walking over I found they has several specials which were not on the menu from the website, really excellent rare fiestbier which was a treat. Since I was going to German in 3 weeks after my visit, I figured I could use a warm up. I am a big fan of bavarian beers for sure. Excellent and friendly staff, good beer (could have been a bit colder), and a cool place. I would recommend it for beer, but I cannot vouch for the food.

Hessen Haus is the go-to place for quality German food in Des Moines. They have an ambiance of an authentic German beer hall. Giant pretzels served piping hot with creamy cheese sauce for dipping. Their Jägermeister dinner is the absolute best! It's a tender, breaded pork tenderloin smothered in a delicious brown gravy with mushrooms. Their red pickled cabbage adds a bite of flavor complimentary to the savory schnitzel. They also have soft pretzel buns on which you can order your sandwich! I've never had anything that wasn't amazing. Get up and go right now.

  • Joe F.

Not sure who is running the kitchen but this is probably the worst German food I've ever had. Why are nachos on every single menu in Iowa? There are no nachos in Germany. Schnitzel was not good, spaetzle was embarrassing. The problem with this place is that they are appealing to the lowest common denominator instead of producing high quality product. Love the fact that the jumbo pretzel isn't made in house. Freshly baked to order, perhaps. But it was frozen when you put it in the oven. The fryer is getting a lot of work here, as is the freezer. Not much fresh, not much craft, whole lot of reheating. Beer is good, nice selection, and that's the only reason it gets 2 stars.

This place is really neat! I liked the look and how everything was set up. Plenty of tables (including some super massive ones) and a really nice big bar. Service was fast and friendly. The Reuben is delicious, as was the Brat Burger and the sausages that came on our cheese plate appetizer. Would definitely visit again! They had some really interesting looking appetizers (Alligator tails?!?!) that I look forward to trying given the chance to return.

Welcome to Germany (aka the old train depot)! In the middle of the United States this is about as close as you will come to an authentic German experience. If you have a group of 5 or more (3/4 if you like to drink) make sure to get a boot. Playing by the rules is more fun, but nothing happens if you don't. They will require a cash deposit if you choose to boot. When the train goes by you can get discounts on certain shots, and the train goes by more frequently than you'd think. You will also find a ton of great beers and German foods that are not your typical bar foods. Join them for Oktoberfest and you'll probably have even more fun.

We had high expectations for this place; given the reviews. Sadly; we were tremendously disappointed. The atmosphere was pretty dingy, and had a bit of a "trashy" look...from the bench seating, freezing temperatures and the limited booth seating; it does not have a very inviting look. Beside the atmosphere, we came here because of the yelp reviews In regards to the food. We were very, very disappointed. The food arrived to our table within about 10 minutes after we ordered; which makes sense, because it tasted as though it came from a can. I never write bad reviews; but this experience was so disappointing. The food was plain, basic and tasteless. We will never visit this restaurant again; nor recommend it to others.

This place is great! Lots of unpronounceable German beers to choose from, good food (try the Armadillo Eggs), and live music at night (a guy playing the accordion comes around to the tables). Come early on weekends because this place gets packed at night; it's very first come first serve / seat yourself. There are tvs to watch sports (there could be more) and inside the place looks authentic, with rafters and German decor / flags. The best thing about this place is the ambiance - it has a lively, warm feeling that makes you want to stay in and have a few drinks and appetizers with friends (especially during the winter months). 5/5 stars. PS try the boot if you're with a group of 4-5 people. Each person passes it around and takes a drink; great fun!

I love this place. Great beer selection and goods food. Had the new brat burger on pretzel bin with fries and a paulaner oktoberfest beer. Brat burger was good, with pretzel bun, sauerkraut, cheese, onion lettuce tomatoes and pickles. The fries we're more like potato wedges than fries, but they were hot and crisp. It was good.

After coming here for a quick drink with a couple buddies a couple of years back, I finally made it back here to have dinner and try their food! We arrived at around 4pm, during their happy hour time between 3-6pm, we discovered it was half off appetizers! (Most appetizers, not all) There were a few customers, but it was not busy at all which was nice. Our server was extremely friendly and able to give us recommendations. For our drink we shared a Butternut Kaffee, which was a warm coffee drink with butternut liquor and whipped cream on top, it was very tasty and warming. For the appetizer we got the Schweine Flugel which were 4 fried pig shank sections with a side of spicy bbq sauce. These tasted amazing and with half off the appetizer, this was a great deal! The meat was flavorful and juicy, highly recommend this! For one of our entrees we had German Mac and Cheese with beef added. This was recommended by our server and it was unbelievably good! There was a large portion of mac and cheese and also of beef (which was like pieces of steak). The toasted bread that came with it was very good as well. The other entree we had was the Bavarian Stroganoff, and it is basically the same exact thing as the Mac and cheese, but replace the cheese sauce with the Stroganoff sauce. It was very good as well, the price for these two items are the same, and should be because they are essentially the same product. Overall, had a great relaxing dinner here before they got busy. I'm glad they offer great German food as well as beer (Although I have yet to sample their German beer products) There are a couple of more menu items I really would like to try!

Review for the drinks: I love coming here on a Friday night and ordering the boot, it's so much fun! It's a great atmosphere. My favorite 2 beers are the Ayinger Brau Weisse (lemon and vanilla) and the Stiegl Radler Grapefruit! Both are light, crisp and easy to down when you're playing the boot game! Would love to return to test out the food.

Great food, beer selection, and of course, Das Boot! Hessen is a Des Moines staple and if you're in town for only a while and you're looking for a fun night out, there's nothing better than sharing a boot with friends... Or four :)

Ich liebe Hessen Haus! As a regular at Huber Haus here in Omaha I was super excited to try this place! Not to mention my 16 different beer tasters and multiple beers before coming here prepped me well for it. I pretty much knew what to expect before walking in but it didn't make it any less awesome. German. Bier. Hall. That's what it is. Awesome. Flags, banners, steins, JAGER EVERYWHERE, wood, architecture, long tables, lederhosen.....I thought I had taken a wrong turn and ended up in Munchen. Bar is huge, tons of spots and taps. Several beers I have never seen on tap abywhre else. Not to mention several American craft beers on tap for those not a fan of DIE BESTE BIER DIE WELT. Our bartender was awesome but I'm pretty sure she hated me by the end of the night. Did I mention they won't play Rammstein? Or even have a jukebox.... Awesome selection of DEUTSCHES BIER and liquor. Barenjager woooooooo! A great atmosphere, and just an overall awesome place. Must stop if you find yourself in Des Moines.

Das Boot! I love visiting Hessen Haus when in Des Moines. The atmosphere can't be beat and is great any time of the day. Come for the bier and the food, you will not be disappointed. Looking forward to visiting this summer when the patio is open!

This place is wonderful and delicious. The Saturday morning crowd might be a bit rowdy, but who am I to judge? I'm the one showing up in workout pants and a tank top because I was craving schweinhaxe and sauerkraut... I've done this place as a one-on-one dinner, I've done it solo with a book, I've done it solo and met people, I've done it in a big group. This place feels like a pub in the true sense of the word -- a public house. It happens to traffic in German fare, but as a German-English mut, I loved the place all the more.

This is a quaint local pub/ restaurant with a waitress who knew her beers and menu well. She made great recommendations for this non German menu gal. Left satisfied and intrigued. It was great walking to our hotel so parking was not an issue.

This bar is probably Des Moines' signature bar, any visitor wishing to experience one of the cities treasurers should not pass up the opportunity to come to Hessen Haus and play the das boot game. But what many people forget is that Hessen Haus serves food, and it is just about as good as their beer selection (which is huge). The Bar is German themed, and I believe the bar used to be a part of the rail system. Saturday nights they have a polka band playing and have polka dancing. The beer selection is huge I don't know anywhere else in town that compares. If your here with a group do a boot, or das boot game, two liters of beer in a glass shaped like a boot. When I eat here I generally try one of the various schnitzels they have, I find it to be one of the best comfort foods in town. The portion size is great, and reasonably priced. The staff is always good, and very nice.

Came here as an out of towner looking for the authentic German experience with my off the boat German friend. We absolutely loved this place. The decor, the beer list, the menu - everything was authentic (according to him) and delicious (according to both of us). I'll keep it short and helpful here: -Red cabbage: Surprisingly delightful, think of a delicious vinegar based coleslaw and then make it better. Fantastic side, German friend approved. -Landjäger: Appetizer, think awesome fat homemade slim jims at a colder temperature. Great starter or snack! German friend approved. -Schweinshaxe: A giant portion of meat, German friend loved it. -Schweineflügel: An unreal rib type pork meat that was delicious without the sauce, and even better with their BBQ type sauce! The only thing we got (in our 5 course meal) that was stated as "Just OK" by my hard to please German friend was the spätzle. My best recommendation to fully experience Hessen Haus is this: Order a half liter of Hefeweizen or Hefeweissbier Dunkel, order some appetizers, order something that sounds good to you, and you'll be sure to leave happy. Genieß es!

3 1/2 stars. Food is solid, nothing amazing. It's really about the beer and the atmosphere which is pretty cool. It really is a lot like a real German beer hall-I know because I was stationed in Germany. I just wish the food was amazing instead of just ok.

I had higher expectations for Hennen Haus. I was in Des Moines with some friends in 2011 and they were under 21 and couldn't go yet, but we came back last night (2015) excited to check it out as a group. The kitchen closes at 10PM, which is shitty because we didn't even get to Des Moines until 10:30PM from Minneapolis. Beer selection was good, looks like a cool - looks like an old fashioned German beer hall on the inside, lined with Jagermeifter and wood barrels with animal heads on them. The waitstaff didn't seem to care about work too much. Our waitress was sitting at the bar chitchatting with a friend for most the time we were there instead of selling us more drinks (our check would have definitely been higher had she been more tentative). Probably won't go back next time I'm in Des Moines, I've seen it once and experienced it I guess to that was that.

I can't think of many that do it better than they do for what they are! German faire with a twist of a college bar and the comfort of a VFW. Wide open spaces and generous table sizes make this a place you want to go with your friends. The amount of German style beers may bring you here but they have more to offer. The staff if friendly and there are enough to provide great service. There were to many beers to select from and I am not savvy to the German selections but I told them what I liked and had me sample one and it was right on the money. The menu had all the traditional selections and more. Once again I asked for their recommendation and was not disappointed. Was thinking it might be bland as I had experienced in other establishments and this was not the case. BLACK FORREST SCHNITZEL! Normally when I am full I will leave done on the plate but this time. My only disappointments are I wasn't here for the final match of the World Cup and I didn't visit during OctoberFest. When my travels bring me to Des Moines, IA this will be the place I bring friends and colleagues to. Oh yea and they have DA BOOT!

Great beer, crap food. We were in town for the fair, and decided to hit this place for dinner before going to an Iowa Cubs game. The place has an excellent selection of beers of all types and origins, with several dozen German beers I'd never heard of before. However, the food is awful. I ordered the Wienerschnitzel, which looked like some mystery meat patty that cost $1.99/lb at Hy-Vee. It had no flavor and had the texture of rubber. Yuk! It came with a side of red cabbage which I could tell came from a jar and German potato salad that was too sweet. My husband ordered a bratwurst platter with a sausage of very mediocre quality. Next time I'm in town I'll have a beer or two here before the game, but eat hot dogs at the ballpark for dinner.

I used to go there a lot back in the day. I brought my brother there last month (he's new to the area), and he loved it. We had a group of 6 and everyone enjoyed their drinks of choice. I don't know if they have live music on the weekend anymore, but the band was great back then. I'm looking forward to bring my wife back in the weekend. How about this weekend? ha. why not? it's -10 degrees outside. Maybe some German beer will warm me up inside.

Hessen Haus is so ballin'. Das boot!!! Okay, so German beer--not my forte and I don't really care, but I do appreciate a nice Hefeweizen but I don't know much beyond that. However, German FOOD YESSSS. Bier cheese soup. So good here. The pretzel here is, of course, so nomtastic. Mac & cheese Baden-baden--omg *drooooool* and the Hunter's pizza is out of control delicious and unique. Certain nights they have an actual polka band and people actually get their polka on. Oh how I love German people, bier and food. Long live Hessen Haus.

I just really can't find a bad thing to say about this place. I've now been here several times, and over the course of almost a decade, this place hasn't disappointed. It's fun, reasonably authentic, they host events as part of Oktoberfest (and who wouldn't love that?), and the team is really knowledgeable and earnest. Like any place, we've had a few challenges flagging a server in the past, but only because of the bar's sheer popularity, not because of any shortages of staff. Great time every time. Even if on a quieter Monday or Tuesday afternoon.

Hessen Haus is the type of place I regularly recommend to people new to Des Moines and visitors. You definitely should go with a group of friends, so you can all share a giant boot of beer. They have such a wide variety of German beer and the bartenders are really knowledgable, so can help you find a brew that you'll enjoy. I'm not a big fan of German food, so have never eaten anything there, so can't comment on the quality. But, I've heard good things from friends. You can't beat a cold German beer in the summer on their patio! Keep in mind, if you are going on a weekend night, try to get there early as it can get pretty busy.

First time travelling to Des Moines, decided to try some German food. Good German food in the US is hard to find, and you won't find it here, if you order the schnitzel or bratwurst. Excellent selection of German beer on draft, and the ambience is fun. If we ever make it back to Des Moines, we'll eat elsewhere and bring our thirst here.

If we had 2 other people with us, we would've definitely gotten a boot of German beer. It looked like so much fun! There were rules associated with them, such as pointing the toe away from you or else you drink more. I ended up settling for the lambic lemonade which I would highly recommend! Love love love this drink! Super amazing! It didn't taste like Ketel one vodka was on it at all! It tasted like regular lemonade with raspberry beer in it. This could be dangerous but it's definitely worth it! I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting downtown Des Moines =)

This is a really neat place to eat. I really love the entire atmosphere of the place. Very authentic food. I had the macaroni bäden bäden. I thought it was awesome. The only problem with this place is that it becomes really busy during the weekends. I would recommend going to this place during the week.

wow! i've never been to a german restaurant restaurant before (well this is more of a pub restaurant). it's definitely tucked away in what seemed like an old rr post and is dark and dreary inside. service is a bit slow, but the food was amazing! i ordered the jaggerschnitzel (fried breaded porkchop) with the pickled red cabbage and mashed potato. the verdict: the schnitzel was omgosh delicious and so was the cabbage (i could have probably eaten another side of the cabbage...it was tart, tangy and oh so good), but the mashed potato with gravy or should i say gravy with mashed potato i should have swapped with the warm german pototo salad. however, at a super reasonable $12.99, there really isn't much complaints. if i was in des moines, i'd totally come here again for the food!

We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout. Then we headed to Hessen Haus for the first leg of celebration, and, we were hungry! We both got the jaeger schnitzel which turned out to be a bit tough and dry. :( We both love German food, so, that was disappointing. They use pork instead of veal for their schnitzel. This is common in Germany, depends on where you go. I really enjoyed the beer, and, the beer selections. I loved the decor of the place. It used to be a luggage holding car for the railroad? It was cool. What really surprised me is that they were selling underberg! I have never seen that in the USA. I get underberg from my local Twin Liquors. Can't think of anywhere else in Austin it is sold. What is underberg? A natural herb bitters that is 44% alcohol. It comes in shot size, and, is popular for that after supper digestion aid. It also helps settle a sour stomach, and, bloat. I like mine chilled in the freezer.

I came here to celebrate a deceased cousin's birthday. I hadn't been here in years until 5/22. All I ordered was a great big ol' beer. It had to be at least 24oz? I don't even know what it was that I drank, I just told the waitress I'll have "what she's having," referencing another girl's drink who was at my table. I didnt feel like looking through the menu, her beer looked good enough to quench my "thirst." My beer was $8.75 at that time, $2 off until 6pm that day. Overall the service was great, and felt prompt throughout the night.

A great place with great food! Went there to check out a polka band named the Barry Boyce Band and a had an unbelievable meal and tried a couple of their amazing Geman beers. They have hundreds of beers to choose from. If you like good German food and German beers I highly recommend this place. The ambiance makes this a perfect place to visit.

This is a must visit place in Des Moines! The food is wholesome and very delicious. You will definitely be satisfied after dinner. The variety of beer is superb. If you have a nice sized group with you, das Boot is definitely the route to go!

Fun place with some character. Food wasn't bad, nor were the drinks. I still prefer other places.

Amazing authentic german food and beers. When you first walk in you will be greeted by thick oak tables lining the left and a bar lining the right. Sunday nights are busy here as the service industry likes to party here after a long weekend. They have an outdoor section which is great place to enjoy the city during the warmer months. If your with a large group get yourself a table and "Das Boot" and let the good times roll. Their Moscow Mules are great here and come in a authentic copper cup and are worth a taste. Get out and enjoy Des Moines!

We came in as we had heard a lot of positive feedback from several friends and family who highly recommended this place. However, It was more than disappointing. The food we ordered was quite good. Our server was very professional and efficient. What we found distasteful was one of your servers I believe her name was Chloe, she was rather loud and talking rather nastily about other employees. This made us all uncomfortable. It really was unprofessional, and frankly, quite childish. We couldn't understand why management would let it go on for as long as it did. It was enough of a letdown to keep us all from returning.

The place had immediate seating, while El Bait Shop, just around the corner, was packed to the gills. I was feeling carb-y, so I naturally went for the giant soft pretzel w/ cheese dippin' sauce and a beer. Good times! Not a bad spot for some German-esque food. Someday I will get to Germany, until then, I guess this place will do. Note: parking not too bad, even during baseball game nights. Bonus!

Where can you get kraut balls, alligator strips (limited time courtesy of Buzzard Billy's menu), pork shank... braised and to-die-for, topped by a huge glass boot of beer to share with at least two table mates? HERE! This is a happy place. Therapeutic even. : )

Great atmosphere, the beer list was fantastic, food was pretty good, service gets a C-. So many missed opportunities wasted to get us to spend more money!

Perhaps one of the finest German restaurants at which I've ever eaten, Hessen Haus is an expansive tour of the defining beers of the region along with some great food. I had the rind-rouladen and kassler rippchen combination. While the rouladen was a little dry, the complaints stop there, as the sauce in which it was covered was pretty great. And the porkchop was about as good as it gets, as I'd never had a porkchop that close to fork tender. While I'm not keen on mashed potatoes, the dual types of kraut kept me busy, and I loved every minute of it. Of course, the primary draw is the beer selection and the big-ass boots, but with a good deal of attention focused on the food, It's certainly a gem in Des Moines' Downtown scene.

Good atmosphere and beer. The food however was not what I was hoping. I've been to better German restaurants. If you're looking for a cool place to gather with friends for a few drinks, it's great. Taking the family out to dinner, not so much.

I really enjoyed our visit and plan to return when I'm next in Des Moines. The wienerschnitzel was good and the beer was amazing. I'm a fan of european beers and this place is thought by some to have the largest collection of German beers this side of the Pond.

This place would get 5 stars if it weren't for the inattentive and apathetic service I've gotten time and time again. Solid German food (sauerkraut!). Solid German beer. DAS BOOT!

Sourcraut is the best I've ever had with the brats. Light beer is also great. Go when the patio is open or the polka band is playing.

Yup, another winner in Des Moines. The huge hunk o'pork called schweinen something or other, was incredibly well-prepared and presented. And the vegetable soup was wonderful. This is a great place, even if you don't drink beer (I don't) but love fresh food.

I love this German pub! It has delicious food, and the beers are so great! If you're with friends, you should drink the boot!

Great selection of import beers, friendly staff and apparently good food (I just drank there, but everyone around me was eating and seemed to like it). Very cool location and convenient to other locations for a fun night out on the town in downtown DSM. Have a boot with two buddies.

The food was ok and it's been awhile since are last time there. The wurst came with cold veggies and mash potatoes that were will past serving. The others meals at the table seemed to be better quality. They have taken off some of the great entrees like sauerbraten. The service was very slow, maybe because it was late afternoon. Our soup appetizers were served with the meals, drink refills slow. We had to ask several times for our check, no split checks. I had a friend from out of town join us because I raved about the beer and food. It was very disappointing for sure.

Nothing but positives for my visit to Hessen Haus. I had the Weinerschnitzel, which was superb. The pickled cabbage had just the right amount of tartness. As for the beer - I couldn't ask for anything better. A great selection of imported German beers, and a knowledgeable bartender who made sure I was happy with my selections. Next time I am in Des Moines, I'll be stopping in again.

I always try to stop in for a beer or two when I'm in town. I love the German hunting lodge feel of this place. It gets the fun kind of rowdy at night - loud, raucous, and full of happy people with a good amount of beer in them. Bartenders are very helpful with beer suggestions, but the waitresses can be slow and inattentive. I've only had the German fare off the menu, but it's solid enough. I mostly go for the beer selection and fun night of good beer drinking with friends.

When I started looking for restaurants to hit in Des Moines, this shot to the top of my list because of two words: gator fingers. I always wanted to eat alligator, and never had the chance, so when I saw that they made it a possibility, there was no chance I was passing it up. The building is a little difficult to find if you don't know your way around the city. Worth noting if you're on a schedule, or you need to use the bathroom like I did. Anyway! The service was solid. Our server gave us the rundown on the discounted and on-tap beers. Football season had just started up, and nothing was too loud other than the people paying attention to the game. But what about the gator fingers? Well, they were fantastic. Terrific batter, and the sauce they come with is essential and not just thrown-on. It's worth bearing in mind, too, that this is German food -- so, even for an appetizer, it'll weigh your guts down a bit. Tip of the hat to whoever keeps the Hessen Haus bathrooms in such good shape. All in all, I have no complaints other than that I was too full and too broke to try the wild boar quesadillas. Next time, right?

We had lunch at Hessen Haus yesterday, which is usually one of my favorite restaurants in Des Moines. Their german beer selection is second to none in Des Moines. The beer was good as usual. The service was satisfactory. My food tasted good, but it took me a long time to find something I wanted to eat on their revamped menu, which brings me to the crux of my review. Their new menu is HIGHLY disappointing. It really feels like they are pandering to the "meat and potatoes" crowd now, which is something I never thought I'd say about the Full Court Press guys. They took more authentic dishes like Rind Rouladen off the menu and replaced them with "german" Mac and Cheese, cavatelli and an italian grinder sandwich?! How are those german dishes, exactly? It really made me sad to read the menu, and I have to say I don't plan on coming back anytime soon. There are a hundred places I can get cavatelli or a grinder in Des Moines. There's only one place I could get German food. Now, it seems like there's none. :(

The beers were delicious and the taps are kept clean, something that I really need in a spot I'd een consider visiting again. The food, however, leaves much to be desired. This place purports to be German but had many menu items (uh, Nachos with bratwurst? really?) that felt like something a drunk American with poor judgement dreamed up. I had a bratwurst basket and german chocolate cake. brat was ok but they only had american mustard. the bread was NOT good. side of german potato salad was more like slightly sour and lukewarm mashed potatoes. German chocolate cake was ok. a little dry but helped along but a hearty dose of sauce. On the plus side, service was friendly and VERY quick.

We got here around 9:30 on a Friday night and the place was already packed! I was in a large group (bachelor party). Took us about 20 min. for everyone to get bier at the bar and another 15-20 for a large table to open up. Even though it was crowded it was a good atmosphere for our "warm-up" stop. We proceeded to go through about 6 or 7 boots of beer in our time there. Our waitress was nice and timely, never had to really wait for more bier. Enjoyed the Spaten Lager, Bitburger, and I think the Warsteiner Dunkel. By the time we started in on some of the dark beer, my mind was not in retention mode. I look forward to coming back and trying some of the food and definitely more of the German biers!

Hessen Haus was a good time! Lots of good German beer on tap and in bottles. Really, quite the selection. And all the food we had was excellent, too. Folks around the table tried the German Nachos (I think that's what they were called). Those were different and surprisingly addictive. Corn chips, bratwurst, cheese sauce, and banana peppers? Weird but good. We also had a hamburger which was super yummy, the schweine flugel (sp?) plate which looked darn good, and a weinerschnitzel. All received good reviews all around. I have two criticisms. First, I noticed that the bartenders, while super nice, cheerful, and cute, did not seem to know a ton about their beer selection. Take that with a grain of salt. It seemed like some of the stock/kegs were getting low so they may have been off their game or dealing with new beers or whatever. So that may not be the norm. However, my bigger complaint was with Das Boot. We were there with a gluten-free friend of ours who can pretty much only drink Strongbow, Bud Light, or gross gluten-free beer. The Strongbow keg was out and Bud Light is (understandably) not on tap. We asked if we could just put 6 Bud Lights in Das Boot because what's more fun than that friggin' humongous boot? The manager said we couldn't do that because...well, I never understood quite why. "If we let you do it, everyone will want to..." Why anyone would willingly choose Bud Light over something really yummy is beyond me. I can't imagine that everyone would suddenly clamor for a boot full of Bud Light. Oh well. I just thought that, since they had a table full of paying customers who had a not-outlandish special request based on a dietary requirement, perhaps they could have found a way to be slightly more accommodating. Don't get me wrong. We had a good time. I'll probably be back and I'm sure I'll have a good time next time, as well. It's totally a cool place to get together with lots of seating and karaoke some nights. Fun stuff!!

Excellent beer. They have a lot of the German style brews, and it's hard not to like a place that has "boots" and multiple Octoberfest beers on tap year-round. Service is fine - not great but fairly consistently ok. The interior has a lot of seating and is very accommodating for large groups. They have a fairly decent sized patio which is nice in the spring and summer. The one drawback to this place is the food. It's pretty poor, even for bar food. There are a lot of other good eating places nearby, so you can always eat somewhere else but go here for the beer.

Great beer selection, non-existent wine selection. Called ahead and asked about wines...were told they had a "moderate" wine list. Arrived to find out the choices were red, white or rose...LOL. Looks super-authentic. Food was okay and the taste improves proportionally to beer intake. Highly recommend the Pretzels. Server was somewhat flaky, but hey, it's a beer hall. They have Apfelkorn for extra credit, don't think I ever had that outside of Germany. If you want the Octoberfest and can't go to Munich, go to Des Moines, IA

Love Hessen Haus, love the beer, love the food, love the whole atmosphere. Hessen Haus has so many excellent beers on tap - Franziskaner, Hoegaarden, Spaten - that I always have a difficult time choosing (and of course, drinking them out of a boot is even better). This is a great place to head with a group, but it's not much fun unless you can find a table - this place has really picked up in the last couple of years and it seems like it is always busy now (with a noise level to match)! The patio is nice when the weather is decent, but I love sitting inside and taking in all the German posters and decor. We just noticed last Friday that Hessen Haus has a $10 boot special over lunch... good thing I don't work downtown, because that sounds extremely hazardous to my workday!

This is becoming my favorite bar in town. We have been going here for years but lately we have really enjoyed bellying up to the bar for some unique drafts. The staff is so nice and are excited to share new beer on tap. They take time to explain any questions I might have about a particular beer. Food is German, so pretty much okay, not the most amazing in town. We don't go for the food but many times end up grabbing a bite. Overall Hessen Haus is killin' it! Great beer selection, knowledgeable staff with a traditional German beer hall feel. Get the Armadillo Eggs :-)

    (5)
  • Nick K.

Go here for a litre or half litre of any of the dozen and a half or so choices of German drafts. Beers change seasonally. German food is featured as well as some American. The German food is good but not great. Bar tenders are usually knowledgable of the beer they serve, so ask questions and request samples. This German beer hall sports traditional German style wooden benches and tables. Grab a table and order a boot. Go during lunch for the "we won't tell your boss" $10 boot special. Dollar of half litres during happy hour. $2 of litres.

I was in Des Moines for a convention and took a walk downtown toward the Science Center - just stumbled into this teutonic jewel. I recommend going there for a great selection of German beer and authentic German food.

Good German beer selection. We didn't try any of the food. I wish they would serve their koelsch in proper glassware. Otherwise, we had fun and it was fun watching people drink boots.

This is one of the best places to congregate on a weekend night in Des Moines. Great atmosphere, great location and a great break from the norm in food and beverage. Everyone loves "the Boot" and I enjoy getting a liter of really good German beers here. One of my favorite places to throw out when meeting friends.

  • Donald Y.

This place has such a great selection of German beers. Their radio commercial claims they have more German beers on tap than any other place outside of Germany. In any case, the beer here is really good, unless you don't like German import than you will just have to stick with Bud/Coors/Miller out of the bottle. The menu is great and they have a wide variety of both German and American fare to choose from. I'm a big fan of the Reuben rolls which are eggroll wraps filled with corned beef, swiss cheese, and sauerkraut and served with a side of 1000 Island dressing. Since this is the same ownership group as Buzzard Billy's they used to have some of the old Buzzard Billy's cajun items on the menu as well after Buzzard Billy's got flooded out. However, I am not sure if they do anymore.

Stopped in with a group of 10 on Saturday night around 10:30p & had no issue getting a big enough table. Got a couple boots & tap beers as well. Service throughout the night was consistent & the vibe was pretty fun. No dancing like our favorite German bar back home, but maybe we didn't stay late enough to find out? Glad we visited!

  • Erica H.

It's ok. If it were just a bar, great. If it were just a restaurant, fantastic. I really like their food, the vegetarian spaetzel is t-a-s-t-y. But you really can't eat dinner here. There are rarely any seats available at night, and especially on weekends, it's so packed with bargoers that dining is next to impossible. We stopped a few weeks ago around 6:30pm on a Friday, and while we were lucky enough to find a table, the area by the wall smelled like old beer spills and vomit. Not very appetizing. By the time we were done eating, the place was jam-packed and super noisy. If you can get here with your group and get hold of a table or a run of seats at the bar, this is a fun place to be. I like the beer selection, the location and atmosphere are usually pretty good. I've noticed it seems to attract the very drunk, though, not sure if it's Das Boot, or the location near so many other bars, or what...maybe I'm just getting too old and I prefer a more chill drinking experience.

The shiznit for beer! Really really good. Food is yum! The shnitzel is really good. I've tried the ruben too. I know I know, it's Russian but I love me some ruben. It was tasty. I would go with the shnitzel for sure next time though. Can't remember what beer I ordered but it was great. Fun atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.

If you liked the movie Beerfest from the Broken Lizzard guys (the guys that brought you Super Troopers) and you are a fan of das boot then you need to come here. This is Central Iowa's only authentic German bar and for a $50 refundable deposit and $19 you can drink from your own das boot. There is a fun drinking game that goes with das boot and it always makes for a good time. I guess if you are really thirsty you could get das boot for your self but it's much better sharing with your friends (just make sure you go with your good friends who you know are disease free because you all drink from the same boot). If you are not feeling up to swapping spit and sharing germs with your friends and don't want das boot you can get a liter of beer (I will refrain from making a liter of cola joke from the movie super troopers) or a 16 oz. draw or bottles of beer. They have German beers, American bottled beer and Smirnoff Ice as well. I suggest when you finish das boot you lay it down on the table so you don't break it. If you don't break das boot you get your $50 back. They make you give them a credit card at the beginning and then when you pay they give you your card back. You can pay for your bill with that credit card or by cash or debit card. If you are in the Des Moines area then you definitely need to stop by the Hessen Haus.

I am a big fan of Hessen Haus, I love their beer, atmosphere, and some of their food. Their wienerschnitzel, soft pretzel and cheese sticks are amazing! I have found though if you stray to far away from those plates it's a pretty steep fall in terms of taste. It's a great bar, 5/5, but in terms of restaurant, their staff isn't as helpful and their deserts are terrible so I would only give that 3/5. Overall Their Boots are great and their beers are great! Their mixed drinks are to pricey for me so I would stick with the beer.

I was unimpressed. Ok, it's more of a beer hall than a restaurant. That's good. The selection of beers was good. The atmosphere was loud, but fine. That's where the compliments end. Unfortunately, the stuff that really matters was less than adequate. The service was quick to start, but then virtually non-existent after that. The food, to be brutally honest, was not very good at all. Had the jagerschnitzel with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. The red cabbage was the best part. The potatoes would have been good if they were hot. The schnitzel was bland. The gravy and accompanying mushroom dust was straight out of the Lawry's dehydrated gravy pouch. I'd be willing to visit again for a couple beers with friends and the atmosphere, but I would not go just for a meal. In fact, I'd probably eat at McDonald's first, then go.

Although I didn't enjoy the cuisine at Hessen Haus, I did enjoy some of their beers and it was awesome. Such a wide, amazing selection of excellent choices. Pricing really isn't too bad either for the quantities of beer you get. I'd definitely head back again when I'm in Des Moines.

If you love beer, then you need to go here. Practically worth the trip to Des Moines on its own. I was in DSM for bid'ness and they took us to this crazy joint. It's a German bierhall, and it is simply amazing. They make their own draught beer, which can be bought in a regular pint glass (weak), an enormous stein (baller), or a boot, which is definitely over a gallon. Das Boot is an enormous clear glass boot, which gets passed around the table. There are rules surrounding this boot, such as: -it cannot touch the table -the toe must point away from the drinker -the boot must be flicked with your finger before passing it on -if the beer splashes, you have to drink again All of which makes for silliness, as you can imagine. But on top of all this, the beer is DELICIOUS and fresh, made right on the premises, not to mention there was a good funk band playing when I was there (funk in Des Moines?? Stranger things have happened...) I didn't have anything to eat, but the food looked good: standard bar grub along with some authentic German eats. This place was the best time I've had at a bar in a really long time....plus my company picked up the tab, so that was the bomb too. However I'm sure paying customers would agree with my assessment of this gem!!

You just don't get much better when you're looking for a German place in the states. Great food, great decor, at least 8 different german-style wheat beers on tap (plus a million more of other styles). And the old railroad depot location is a treat. LOVE IT.

  • Jason K.

Great place to go with a group of people. The bar is in a huge wooden building and the interior is decorated with beer steins and other Germanic tchochkes. They also have a pretty large patio. They serve up a large selection of German beers, including a new favorite of mine: Spaten Optimator (shout out to Matt G). The prices are pretty cheap. And be sure to play the boot game, which other people on here have described. It's a fun game to play with your friends.

  • Ann A.

This quintessential German American restaurant is delightfully tacky from the decor to the music to the food. Das Boot, $3 jäger shots when the train passes, a cajun menu...yeah, I don't know, but somehow it works. Amazing beer selection, too. Get the sauerkraut and reuben balls to share!

  • Amy B.

Hessen Haus is a great place to play for you and ALL of your friends! They have at least a gazillion delicious (and strong) German craft beers on tap and in bottles. The menu is full of interesting German cuisine and the staff is hilarious....especially if you catch the bar staff on the weekends....it's like dinner and a show. Ooooh!! I almost forgot.....They have LIVE POLKA most Saturday nights....call ahead to make sure, and if you ever see Barefoot Becky or Bob Malek playing, hustle your Lederhosen down there for an amazing time that's fun for the whole family....

I've been here several times but hadn't stopped in for a quite a while until recently. I went here a couple of times over the last couple of weeks and had a great experience on both visits. The first visit was with a large group on a Saturday night. We caught the tail end of the polka band and got a large table (this was kind of lucky). We didn't have food this night but we did get a couple boots and large mugs of German Beer. The beer was great and so was the service for as busy it was. The second visit was a couple weeks later for a Sunday afternoon lunch. There lunch menu was extremely reasonable and included selections of German and Cajun(Buzzard Billy's) items. I went with the Jagerschitzel with German potato salad. It was excellent and my dining partners enjoyed their selections of a Reuben and Rasta Pasta. Rasta Pasta was jerk chicken in a spicy alfredo type sauce. Again the service was great. I would definitely recommend but will warn you that it is very busy on weekend evenings.

If your looking to go out but stay hidden this is the place to go downtown. It has an old town pub kind of feel and every time the train passes you can opt for a $3 shot of Yager! :) The Hacker-Pschorr Weiss is my personal fav and the only place in Des Moines that serves it which why I come here. I'm not a big fan of german food, but I will say the brautwurst here is delicious! The patio is also a great hang out spot when the weather is nice.

  • I l.

If you like German, and you like big, or maybe even big Germans this is the place to go. The tables are set up for big groups, the steins are big, das boot is bigger. Lots of authentic german beirs, they do have german food, but the place is made for drinking. The best part is Oktoberfest at the Hessen Haus. If you have birthday party, or other celebration and you have 15 people, and want to drink, The Hessen Haus is your bar. The only negative is when it's busy you can wait 1/2 hour for a drink.

This is a delightful environment (if a bit noisy) that offers a great selection of german beer and some fantastic German food. I have eaten at the Haus a few times and each time tried to get a different dish, they are all scrumptious and offer very generous portions.

What a great place!! My first visit, I ordered the Wienerschnitzel and it was fantastic, along with a great beer selection. I'll get to that later. I was at another bar in the area and told them how much I enjoyed Hessen Haus and the bartendar asked if I had the armadillo eggs or the Bavarian nachos, which has brats in place of beef. I went back on my next visit to Des Moines and made a beeline to Hessen Haus for those appetizers. The armadillo eggs are a chicken breast with a dollop of cheese and a jalepeno slice in the middle, then it's rolled up in to a ball and wrapped entirely in bacon!! They look like a small football. I'm drooling just writing this review. The nachos were so different and sooo great as well. Their beer selection is wonderful with a great selection of different styles, both on draft and in the bottle. I had the Grieskirchner Weisse and Pils and they were so refreshing and tasted fantastic. This is a definite stop of mine each time I am in Des Moines or just passing through. They also have a great crew that works there and are very helpful when ordering.

This place has an outdoor patio, great food and all the drink you might need. Just bring your friends, and sit outside and relax and enjoy downtown Des Moines. The JaegerSchnitzel is highly recommended. I know you aren't going to believe this, but I would say this place might be kid friendly. They have plenty of kids friendly menu items. This lovely decorated restaurant is located a stones throw from the Science Museum on 4th Street.

While a lot of people know the Hessen Haus as a bar and beer hall, and it does have a great selection of beers, don't discount the food. They offer authentic German fare as well as some more original dishes. They even have some vegetarian choices; the Black Forest Pizza, with munster cheese, is a definite winner. They also tend to carry exotic meats or wild game. Sit back with a tall glass of Warsteiner and enjoy a taste of Bavaria!
